Medical Insurance Specialist/Surgery Scheduling Assistant

The Medical Insurance Claim Specialist is primarily responsible for posting insurance payments, verifying insurance eligibility, assisting the surgery scheduler as needed, and reconciling vendor statements. The position is responsible for verifying insurance eligibility for patients before their appointments. The position will prepare surgery estimates for patients. The position requires a thorough understanding of medical terminology, medical coding and billing experience, medical insurance experience, exceptional customer service and strict attention to detail. The ability to professionally communicate with patients, physicians and co-workers is critical. Employees must be energetic and willing to assist in all areas of clinic success.
List of Responsibilities/Duties
Daily review of every insurance claim paid on electronic and paper EOB’s
Maintain scanned copies of all EOB’s and insurance correspondence
Work with all insurance companies/government agencies regarding any outstanding insurance claim, denial or payment issue. Develop appropriate professional relationships with provider reps and other contacts with all contracted carriers/payers.
Stay current on changes in insurance/billing within the industry
Work with other staff to resolve any systemic billing/coding issue the clinic may have
Verification of patient insurance – 2 days in advance of appointments and as needed
Obtain verification, referrals, and prioritization for all surgery patients
Assist with the input of patient insurance information or demographic information as needed
Answer all questions from patients regarding all insurance filings and/or account balances
Assist with surgery scheduling as needed
Cross train as appropriate and as time allows
Maintain professional demeanor at all times with focus on extraordinary patient care & service.
Other duties/responsibilities as assigned at the discretion of management, either verbally or in writing.
Minimum Knowledge & Skill Requirements
Familiarity with basic medical terminology & procedures
Demonstrated proficient experience with medical coding, billing & insurance procedures
Working knowledge and demonstration of compliance with patient confidentiality procedures
Demonstration of attention to detail
Basic computer experience including electronic scheduling and Microsoft Office
Energetic personality and professional demeanor at all times
Empathy and genuine concern for patient care and comfort
Communication and cooperation with patients, physicians, vendors and fellow employees

Minimum Education & Background Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent
Previous experience or training in this or similar position
